Support / Requirements Discovery

Requirements Discovery.

The most expensive mistake is building the wrong thing.

By Brian Gagne & Meelie Gagne · March 19, 2026

Building the wrong thing costs more than building nothing

The most expensive technology projects are not the ones that take too long. They are the ones that solve the wrong problem. Requirements discovery prevents that. Before we write a line of code, before we provision a server, before we design an interface, we make sure we understand what you actually need. Not what you think you need. Not what a vendor told you that you need. What your business actually requires to move forward.

What discovery looks like

We sit with the people who understand the problem. Usually that is a combination of decision-makers who know the business direction and operators who know the daily reality. We ask questions. We listen. We document. Then we translate what we heard into a technical scope that can be estimated, built, and verified. This is where strategic advisory connects to delivery. The discovery output is not a vague proposal. It is a specific plan with clear boundaries, defined outcomes, and realistic timelines.

13+
years with our longest client relationships

Our longest client relationships started in 2012. Relationships last that long because we start them correctly. Discovery sets expectations on both sides and ensures that what we build is what you actually need.

Discovery is included, not an upsell

We do not charge separately for discovery on managed services or project engagements. It is built into how we work. Skipping discovery to save time is like skipping the foundation to save on a building. The cost shows up later, amplified.

Discovery that uncovered the real problem

Problem

A cannabis operation came to us wanting to replace their expensive software suite. The stated need was a cheaper version of what they had.

Solution

Discovery revealed the actual problem was not cost. It was inflexibility. The existing software could not support the growth trajectory the business was on. We scoped a custom ERP with METRC integration designed for where the business was going, not just where it was.

Outcome

Client reported 400% revenue growth. The technology became a growth enabler instead of a cost center. New ownership retained us for additional businesses after a leadership change.

The stated requirement and the actual requirement are often different. Discovery is where you find out which is which.

Frequently asked questions

How long does discovery take?

Typically one to two weeks for a focused project. Larger engagements with complex environments can take three to four weeks. We define the discovery timeline upfront so expectations are clear on both sides.

What if discovery reveals we do not need what we thought we needed?

That is one of the most valuable outcomes discovery can produce. Finding out you do not need to build something saves you the cost of building the wrong thing. We would rather give you an honest assessment than a bigger invoice.
